The light. The wildlife. The feeling of looking out at the water and remembering how big and beautiful this planet really is. That's part of why this Earth Month partner highlight feels so meaningful to us. When we support ocean restoration, we are not just funding a project somewhere far away. We are helping care for the coastlines, marine life, and local communities that make so many of our travel experiences unforgettable. That's why we are proud to support SeaTrees through two restoration projects in Europe: seagrass restoration in Mallorca, Spain, and kelp restoration in Cascais, Portugal. SeaTrees works with local partners to restore coastal ecosystems like seagrass meadows, kelp forests, mangroves, and coral reefs, with a focus on ocean health, biodiversity, and community impact. - - - ## Restoring Seagrass in Mallorca, Spain In Mallorca, SeaTrees is working with The Cleanwave Foundation on the MedGardens Seagrass and Macroalgae Restoration Project. This work supports one of three restoration sites and includes more than planting. This project conducts research, completes marine debris removal, provides education, volunteer opportunities, and more sustainable mooring equipment in an area with heavy boat traffic. Why should you care about seagrass? Seagrass helps support clear water, thriving marine life, healthier fisheries, carbon storage, and protection from coastal erosion during storms. It is one of those quiet ecosystems that does a huge amount of work below the surface. Supporting this project means supporting the long-term health of a place people already love to visit.  ## Bringing Kelp Back in Cascais, Portugal In Cascais, SeaTrees is supporting kelp restoration with SeaForester. Kelp forests once thrived there but have largely disappeared over the last few decades. Even as conditions have improved, kelp has not naturally returned to much of the coastline, which is why this project focuses on active restoration. Using an innovative method called green gravel, the team grows seaweed on small stones in nurseries and then returns them to the sea to help rebuild the forest. This project matters because kelp forests are not just seaweed. They create habitat, support biodiversity, improve water quality, and help strengthen coastal ecosystems. When kelp disappears, the effects ripple outward, impacting marine life and communities connected to the sea. Restoration gives that system a chance to come back. ## Earth Month, the Olivia Way These ecosystems help protect the world we love to explore. They support cleaner water, healthier marine life, stronger coastlines, and more resilient communities. They help make ocean destinations feel vibrant, wild, and full of wonder. Woven into those days, between the riads and the medinas, the camel rides and the cooking classes, are encounters designed to do more than inspire. They're designed to impact. ## Talassemtane Women's Cooperative In the heart of Chefchaouen's medina, six women are building something that extends far beyond the textiles they weave. The Talassemtane Women's Cooperative is preserving tradition and rewriting what economic independence looks like for women in Morocco's Rif Mountains. When you step into their workshop, you're witnessing innovation rooted in heritage. The leader of the collective learned the traditionally male practice of blanket weaving and has brought it to her community, teaching other women this art.  These artisans blend centuries-old techniques with contemporary design, creating work so exceptional that prominent European financial institution, Santander Bank selected them as one of just nine Moroccan projects worthy of investment support. But the real story isn't in the accolades. It's in what this cooperative makes possible: financial autonomy and skills to be passed down through generations of women. It's a model that proves craft isn't quaint, it's quite powerful. And that impact ripples outward. When women earn, entire families shift. Girls stay in school longer. Health outcomes improve. Communities stabilize. The looms at Talassemtane aren't just creating beautiful textiles—they're creating positive change for the future of their community. ## Chef Tarik's Kitchen Miles south in Marrakech, Chef Tarik runs a different kind of workshop, one where the act of cooking becomes an act of community investment. His kitchen garden employs local women and men, sources from neighborhood markets and the farm property, turning culinary education into economic opportunity. The individuals who work alongside him aren't just teaching you to layer spices in a tagine. They're supporting their families, building their skills, and participating in an economy that sees them as essential. When Chef Tarik's staff guides your hands through shaping couscous or explains the five-step process of Moroccan tea, you're learning from people whose expertise is valued as a precious skill. That's intentional. That's the point. These experiences give visiting Olivians a chance to experience, partake, and purchase from these meaningful ventures and the people within them who are building their own paths. ## Education for All Morocco Last year, Olivia Gives Back put that belief into action by supporting Education for All Morocco, one of three organizations who uplift women and girls around the world that Olivia chose to support this year around Giving Tuesday. In Morocco's rural regions, secondary school can be miles away, too far for girls to travel safely each day. Education for All bridges that distance with boarding houses, meals, and the kind of stable environments where futures take shape. Olivia contributed $5,000 to this cause, and our community raised just over $11,000 total for EFA and two other remarkable organizations in Nepal and Tanzania. But Giving Tuesday was a beginning, not an end. The need continues. Girls like Safa, now pursuing her degree in Digital Engineering, exist and thrive because someone believed that her potential mattered enough to invest in it. On farms across the United States, **Rootella Carbon** is helping restore soil and fight climate change. Using natural mycorrhizal fungi, this project increases soil carbon by creating a stable type of carbon that can remain in the ground for 10,000 years. This boosts crop yields and allows farmers to benefit financially through carbon credit revenue.  The **Khalladi Wind Farm**, located near Tangiers, is one of Morocco’s major investments in renewable energy. In the Yaeda Valley of northern Tanzania, one of the world’s last remaining hunter-gatherer communities is being supported through forest preservation and enhanced enforcement of land rights. The **Yaeda-Eyasi Landscap*e*** project helps protect the Hadza people’s way of life and channels funding into healthcare and education, especially for women and girls. Indonesia’s **Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve** stands out for its size and scope. Forests play a vital role in maintaining the health of our planet. They clean our air, regulate water cycles, preserve biodiversity, and absorb around 30% of global CO₂ emissions. But they’re disappearing at an alarming rate. By restoring these natural carbon-capturing systems, we’re not only helping to stabilize the climate but also supporting communities and ecosystems that depend on forests for their survival. ## A Forest That Grows More Than Trees Known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity, Nepal has lost more than **70% of its forests** due to decades of deforestation. The impact is felt not just in the environment, but in people’s lives. Especially by women in rural communities who often face limited job opportunities and social restrictions. The **Olivia Travel Forest**, located in Nepal’s Bardiya District, is helping to change that. So far, we’ve planted **19,524 trees**, expected to remove **3,204 tons of CO₂** over their lifetimes. The reforestation work brings life-changing impact to the communities that plant and care for these forests. Approximately 50% of the reforestation team members are women, many of whom gain steady income, social standing, and new opportunities through this work. At the heart of this effort is **Rachhya Kayastha**, Country Director of Eden Reforestation Projects Nepal. Born in the Himalayan region, Rachhya began her journey with Eden in 2016 as a field officer and became Eden Nepal’s director in 2018.  Her leadership is grounded in collaboration and equity, with a vision to restore harmony between human habitation and the natural world. Under her guidance, the project has grown into a beacon of environmental and social progress. This reforestation initiative aligns with **nine United Nations Sustainable Development Goals**, including gender equality, climate action, and poverty alleviation. Across Tanzania, the threat of **FGM** forces many girls to make heartbreaking choices about their safety and their futures. **Hope for Girls & Women Tanzania** is there in those critical moments, offering refuge, protection, trauma counseling, education, and legal support to girls and women escaping immediate danger. One of those girls is **Rebecca**, **disowned by her family** for bravely refusing to undergo FGM, and forced to flee her home. And yet, it could not be any more important. Fear is a powerful weapon. But joy is its strongest deflector. When we are joyful, our hearts are too full for fear to take hold. When we spread joy, we strengthen joy’s ability to hold space when we need it. Joy shared is joy multiplied. When we are joyful and share that joy, we are resisting the hate and the fear and those who want to steal our power. ## JOY IS SELF-CARE When we are joyful we are healing ourselves. Just existing right now can be painful. We are constantly bombarded with news that breaks our hearts and tears at the very fibers of our being. Joy is the balm that can soothe the wounds that the world is inflicting on us and gives up the ability to rebuild our resolve and walk in our power. ## JOY IS HOW WE CAN CARE FOR OTHERS When we share and spread our joy we are emboldening others to plant and grow seeds of joy in their own lives. It may be harder for some people than others to be joyful. We can help those who are having a hard time by reminding them of things there are to be joyful about and by embodying joy ourselves. The best thing we can be in times like these is a strong example. ## JOY IS LIKE GARLIC TO A VAMPIRE It makes them recoil. The goal of hate is to make us terrified. When they tell us they are going to hurt us for simply being who we are, they are hoping we will just stop being who we are. Instead, we should do the exact opposite. ## JOY HAS NO LIMIT, NO EXPIRATION DATE, NO SOLE OWNER No one – no one – can stop us from being joyful. They can make it hard – really, really hard – but they can’t stop us. Bad guys always want the good folks to just roll over and say, “Ok. I give up.” So, don’t give up. And don’t give in. Fighting back can look like a pride parade – or a ship full of lesbians and LGBTQ+ women living out loud or dressing up in rainbows and taking to the streets or simply laughing with friends. ## JOY IS RESISTANCE! It’s my favorite tool of the resistance in fact. Share the memes. Laugh at their ridiculousness. Share their foibles. Correct their errors as loudly and publicly as possible. Laugh at them loudly and often and publicly.  Let’s not surrender. Instead, let’s spread joy. Get together with family and friends. Don’t talk about how things are falling apart. Talk about how much we are all coming together. Put your time and energy into telling those who are fighting the good fight how amazing we think they are. Send joyful postcards to supportive politicians. Heck, send them to friends and family and remind them how much good is in the world. Stand with pride. Stand with joy. Share the truth.
